On the surface, planning a mid-day picnic in the park is a piece of cake. All you need to do is gather a guest list, purchase proper fare, and select a destination. However, travelers (non-locals) often choose the nearest picnic area and treat the affair as an afterthought. The subtle art of planning a picnic takes creativity, astute research, and fitting organizational skills, especially if you want the meal to complement an already-stellar day. Here at Starfish Manor Oceanfront Hotel, not only will you be steps away from a variety of potential picnic locales, but you’ll also be staying at one of the most romantic establishments along Oregon’s golden coast.
A Picnic in the Park: 3 Beautiful Picnic Destinations
First and foremost, Starfish Manor Oceanfront Hotel boasts 68 uniquely-designed rooms, many with oceanfront decks. As you can imagine, the deck is the perfect alternative to a picnic in the park (particularly if you slept in). There’s just something magical about savoring a light lunch as the soft, faintly salty Pacific Ocean breeze wafts through your hair. That being said, we want to highlight a couple of nearby natural attractions, including a knoll, a beach, and a recreation area.
While we recognize that not everyone who chooses our beachside paradise desires to explore the mainland, The Knoll’s jaw-dropping ocean views are nothing short of stellar. You certainly don’t have to hike all the way to God’s Thumb to find an idyllic spot for a mid-afternoon picnic in the park, as there is ample meadowy acreage within reach. A good deal of elevation gain is required for this excursion, but it’s well worth the exertion and patience. Along the way, dense forestry provides plenty of shade and photo opportunities.
The Beach
So, duh, the perfect place to hold a picnic in the “park” is along Lincoln City’s seemingly endless beach. Several stretches pristine sand, such as Canyon Drive Park, D River, and our very own NW 26th Street Beach, feature a diverse array of visual delights, from hidden tide pools to wind-swept meadows. Idyllic beach fare includes cold sandwiches, crisp vegetables, fresh fruit, and a healthy-ish snack, such as SunChips or anything from Trillium Natural Foods, really.
It seems mildly irreverent to visit a lake when nearly 64 million square miles of ocean stares back at you. But sometimes a slight change of scenery does the traveler well, especially during peak seasons. The lengthy public boat dock on the west end of Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area sees very little foot traffic, and it magnificently peers toward the surrounding mountain range that lies to the east. Some visitors will lug their fishing gear along with the basket of eats to complement the delightful picnic in the park.
