There are 11 craft breweries within an hour’s drive from Lincoln City’s romantic Starfish Manor Oceanfront Hotel. With so many award-winning Oregon Coast breweries and so little time, choosing one or two stops on your self-guided beer tour is no walk in the park. Thankfully, the Starfish Manor team pieced together a helpful local brewery guide, complete with three quintessential destinations in Gleneden Beach, Pacific City, and Tillamook.
Oregon Coast Breweries: 3 Pacific Northwest Hidden Gems
It’s worth noting that Lincoln City itself boasts two brewpubs (Rusty Truck Brewing and McMenamins Lighthouse Brewpub), but neither experience stacks up against the likes of de Garde and Pelican Brewing. We’d also like to tip our cap to Newport Brewing Company, Waggy Dog Brewing (coming soon), and Rogue Brewer’s on the Bay, the third-largest brewery in Oregon. However, these three hand-selected Oregon Coast breweries wholly encapsulate the essence of the world-famous Pacific Northwest beer scene. Our journey begins in nearby Gleneden Beach, home to Beachcrest Brewing.
Everything from Beachcrest’s vibrant branding to its sleek taproom and bay-view patio is on point. The tavern is open from Wednesday through Monday. And these beertenders are slinging some of the tastiest microbrews in the state, including the festive OktoberCrest Marzen, citrusy Siletz Bay Hazy IPA, and brand new Great Weiss Whale Hefeweizen. The guys and gals at Breachcrest have a knack for satisfying just about every beer palate. For such a young brewery, it sure seems that husband-and-wife-duo Matt and Amy White have caught lightning in a bottle.
Admittedly, Pelican Brewing’s beer doesn’t stack up to Beachcrest or de Garde. That being said, how can you argue with that view of Pacific City’s version of Haystack Rock? Pelican Brewing’s Pacific City location (one of its four Oregon Coast breweries) rests along the edge of the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, an incredibly gorgeous uninhabited four-season recreational wonderland. Patrons can sip on top-notch brews (such as the Bad Santa or Our Dankest Hour) with their toes in the sand while munching on fish and chips and observing birds soar above picturesque Haystack Rock.
Yes, the drive from Starfish Manor Oceanfront Hotel to Tillamook is nearly an hour. However, we couldn’t think of a better excuse to trek up to Clatsop County, home to Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park, and historic Astoria. de Garde Brewing may seem like a prototypical small-town taproom, but hidden in this wooden, undersized brewery is one of the nation’s finest fermentoriums. Patrons will quickly discover a bevy of wild flavors and unique concoctions as de Garde, as its name subtly suggests, focuses solely on spontaneous ales. Let the yeast and bacteria do all of the heavy lifting. These incredibly delicate, fruity, and delicious ales are all one-of-a-kind brews. Thus, the taproom is ever-changing, with the current lineup featuring the double dry-hopped Frais (barrel-aged for two years), the Blackberry BuVeaux, and the fourth batch of The Sixth Peach.
